Criminal Defence Lawyer in Dubai
A criminal defence lawyer in Dubai protects you from the first police call to the final judgment. The most important work usually happens before trial: during questioning, detention and the Public Prosecution's review of the file.
Hassan Al Abdooli Advocates & Legal Consultants is a Dubai law firm based in Deira. Our advocates have rights of audience before the UAE courts and defend residents, visitors and companies in criminal matters every week. Some are first-time allegations. Others are complex fraud, cybercrime or drug cases with years of freedom at stake.
This page explains how a criminal case in Dubai moves, where people damage their own defence, and what a good defence lawyer actually does at each stage. Read it before you speak to anyone about the allegation.
Key Points
- Most criminal cases in Dubai are shaped before a judge sees them.
- Do not give a detailed statement about the allegation before you have legal advice.
- Your lawyer can apply for bail or release to the Public Prosecution or the court.
- Financial crime and cybercrime need specialist evidence work, not just legal argument.
- No honest lawyer will promise you an acquittal.
How a criminal case moves in Dubai
A criminal case in Dubai usually passes through four stages: a police complaint, a police investigation, a Public Prosecution review and, if the prosecutor decides to charge, a criminal court trial.
It starts with a complaint. That might come from a private person, a company, a bank or a government body. The police open a file, call you in and take statements. They may also seize phones, laptops or documents.
Then the file goes to the Public Prosecution. The prosecutor questions you again, reviews the evidence and decides one of three things: close the case, settle it where the law allows, or refer it to court. Many cases end here. So this is where your lawyer earns the fee.
If the case goes to court, the Court of First Instance hears it. You can appeal to the Court of Appeal and, in some cases, to the Court of Cassation. Every stage has its own deadlines. Miss one and you can lose a right you will not get back.
Why the first 48 hours matter most
What you say in your first police statement can follow you all the way to judgment. Courts give real weight to early statements, and changing your account later damages your credibility.
People make the same mistakes again and again. They try to explain everything at once. They guess at dates and amounts. They sign a statement written in Arabic without understanding it. Or they contact the complainant to fix things, which can create a second offence.
So slow down. You have the right to understand what you are signing. You can ask for an interpreter. And you can ask to speak to a lawyer before you go further. Use those rights.
- Police questioning
- Pre-trial detention
- Public Prosecution review
Those three points decide most cases. With an advocate involved early, your account is recorded accurately and procedural errors by the authorities get noticed while they still matter.
Every case needs its own defence
A drug charge and a fraud allegation are defended in completely different ways. We build the defence around the evidence in your file, not around a template.
Financial and white-collar crime
These cases rest on the paper trail. Investigators often misread company structures, shareholder loans or cross-border transfers. We review the transactions line by line, work with forensic accountants where needed and present audited records that show the full picture. The aim is simple: prove there was no criminal intent.
Cybercrime
UAE cybercrime law is strict, and a single social media post or message can lead to a complaint. The evidence is technical: IP addresses, server logs, device access records and screenshots. We test how that evidence was collected and who really had access to the account. Badly handled digital evidence can and should be challenged.
Drug offences
The UAE takes a hard line on drugs, and our criminal lawyers in Dubai handle these cases regularly. Even trace amounts in a test can lead to a case. We examine the arrest, the search and the laboratory process, and we look closely at how the charge is classified, because classification changes the penalty.
Assault, threats and public order
These cases often come down to witness accounts and CCTV. Footage gets overwritten quickly, so we move early to have it preserved. Some of these matters can also be settled with the complainant through the proper legal channel, which can change the outcome.

Yes, you can apply for release in Dubai. Your lawyer can ask the Public Prosecution or the court to release you on bail, usually against a guarantee such as a passport or cash deposit.
A criminal case often comes with a travel ban. That stops you leaving the UAE until the case is resolved or the ban is lifted. If your job, family or business depends on travel, tell your lawyer on day one. There are sometimes ways to lift or suspend a ban against a guarantee.

How to choose a criminal defence lawyer in Dubai
Choose a lawyer who appears in Dubai's criminal courts personally, tells you the hard truth about your case and has handled your type of charge before.
First, courtroom experience. Your lawyer should stand before UAE judges themselves, not pass your hearings to a junior you have never met.
Second, honesty. A good lawyer tells you your real exposure, even when it is not what you hoped to hear. Be careful with anyone who promises an acquittal on the first call. Nobody can promise that.
Third, local procedure. Dubai Police, the Dubai Public Prosecution and the Dubai Courts each have their own practices. That knowledge only comes from years of doing the work here.
And fourth, language. You need to understand every document you sign. Our team works in Arabic and English, with support in Hindi and Urdu (see our legal assistance for expats), and arranges interpreters for other languages.
What to bring to your first meeting
The more we see, the sooner we can tell you where you stand. Bring anything connected to the case:
- Police or prosecution documents
- Court notices and summons
- Passport and Emirates ID
- Contracts or agreements
- Emails and messages
- Bank and financial records
- Photos or videos
- Medical reports
- Business records
- Witness contact details
What to do if you face a criminal case in Dubai
Do Not Ignore It
Respond to every police, prosecution or court notice. Missing a summons makes your position much worse.
Stay Silent on Detail
Do not explain the allegation in depth before you have legal advice.
Keep Everything
Keep the complaint, summons, receipts, messages and any document connected to the case.
Call a Lawyer
Give your lawyer the full account, including the parts that look bad. We can only defend what we know.
Frequently Asked Questions
They advise you during police questioning, review the prosecution file, apply for bail and represent you in court through any appeal.
Yes. UAE cybercrime law covers insults, defamation and false news online, and a complaint can lead to arrest and prosecution.
Simple cases can close within weeks at prosecution stage. Contested trials with appeals can take several months or longer.
Some can. Certain offences, such as some assault and financial cases, may close if the complainant formally waives the complaint.
You should have one. The prosecutor decides whether you go to court, so advice before questioning can change the outcome.
