Travel Ban Lawyer in Dubai
A travel ban in Dubai stops you leaving the UAE until the case behind it is resolved or the authority that issued it lifts it. A lawyer finds out which authority issued the ban, why, and what it will take to remove it.
Hassan Al Abdooli Advocates & Legal Consultants handles travel ban cases for residents, business owners and visitors in Dubai. Most of our clients learn about the ban at the worst possible moment: at the airport, with a boarding pass in hand. It does not have to go that way.
This page explains who can issue a travel ban, how to check if you have one and the practical routes to getting it lifted. A ban is serious. But it is rarely permanent if you deal with the cause.
Key Points
- Travel bans in the UAE can come from the Public Prosecution, the police or the courts.
- Criminal complaints, unpaid debts, rent disputes, labour claims and family cases can all lead to a ban.
- You can usually check for a ban before you travel.
- Paying or settling the debt is not the only way out. Guarantees and court applications can work too.
- A ban does not lift itself when the case ends. Someone has to request the removal.
Who can put a travel ban on you in Dubai
In Dubai, a travel ban can be issued by the Public Prosecution in criminal cases, by the civil or execution courts in money claims, and by the personal status courts in family matters.
Criminal travel bans
When someone files a criminal complaint against you, the Public Prosecution can stop you leaving while it investigates. This is common in fraud, breach of trust, assault and cybercrime complaints, and it is one reason to have a criminal defence lawyer involved from the start. The ban usually stays until the case closes or the prosecutor agrees to lift it.
Civil and debt travel bans
A creditor, such as a bank, a landlord or a business partner, can ask the court for a precautionary travel ban while it pursues a money claim. The court looks at whether the debt is real and whether there is a genuine risk you will leave without paying. Execution courts can also impose a ban after judgment if the debt stays unpaid.
Family travel bans
In divorce and custody disputes, a parent can ask the court to stop a child travelling. A ban can also arise from unpaid maintenance. Our family lawyers and divorce lawyers handle these cases with care, because the court's main concern is the child, not the parents' arguments.
Common reasons people end up with a ban
In our experience, most travel bans in Dubai come from a handful of situations:
- Unpaid personal loans or credit cards
- Business debts and partner disputes
- Criminal complaints for fraud or breach of trust
- Rent claims from landlords
- Labour claims from employees
- Unpaid court judgments
- Divorce and custody disputes
- Unpaid maintenance
Bounced cheques used to be the classic cause. Since the 2022 changes to the UAE Commercial Transactions Law, most cheques bounced for lack of funds are no longer treated as a crime. But the holder can still take the cheque straight to the execution court, and that route can lead to a civil travel ban. So a bounced cheque is still a real risk.
How to check if you have a travel ban in Dubai
You can check for a travel ban in Dubai through the Dubai Police app or website, the Dubai Public Prosecution services, the Dubai Courts e-services or by asking a lawyer to search on your behalf.
Online checks are useful, but they have limits. They may not show every type of ban, and they rarely tell you the full reason. A lawyer can search across police, prosecution and court systems, pull the case number and read the file behind it.
Check before you book a flight. And check again if you have any open dispute, unpaid loan or pending complaint. Finding out at immigration is expensive, stressful and avoidable.

A travel ban in Dubai is lifted when the case behind it is resolved, when you provide an acceptable guarantee, or when a court or the Public Prosecution agrees the ban is no longer justified.
The right route depends on what caused the ban. These are the options we use most:
Settle or pay the claim
If the ban rests on a debt, paying it or agreeing a settlement usually ends it. Our banking lawyers negotiate with banks and creditors and make sure the settlement includes a written commitment to request removal of the ban. Without that commitment, people pay and stay stuck.
Offer a guarantee
In many cases the court or prosecutor will lift or suspend a ban against a guarantee. That can be a bank guarantee, a cash deposit or a personal guarantee from a UAE resident. This lets you travel while the case continues.
Challenge the ban in court
Some bans should never have been issued. Our civil lawyers handle these challenges. The claim may be weak, the debt disputed or the risk of flight overstated. We file a grievance or objection and argue for removal. Courts do lift bans that do not meet the legal test.
Close the underlying case
In criminal matters, the strongest route is often a good defence. When the prosecution closes the file or the court acquits you, we follow up to make sure the ban is formally removed from the system.
Why you need a lawyer, not just a payment
Paying a debt does not automatically remove a Dubai travel ban. Someone must file the removal request with the right authority, and that step is often missed.
We see it often. A client settles with a bank, gets a clearance letter and heads to the airport. The ban is still active because nobody told the court. So the trip is lost and the stress starts again.
Our job is to find every active ban against you, deal with each cause and confirm in writing that the ban is gone before you travel. That last step matters most.
Travel bans for business owners and investors
Business owners in Dubai often face travel bans over company debts, partner disputes or unpaid cheques signed on the company's behalf.
If you signed a personal guarantee for a company loan, the bank can come after you personally. And if you signed company cheques, the holder may pursue you as well as the company. Many owners only find this out when the business runs into trouble.
We review what you signed, separate personal exposure from company exposure and negotiate with creditors as a whole rather than one by one. A single settlement plan often clears several bans at once.
